В отличие от to steal, синонимичный ему глагол to rob употребляется с одушевленным и неодушевленным дополнением: to rob smb of smth — украсть что-либо у кого-либо или to rob a building (a bank, an office) — ограбить здание (банк, офис). Оба глагола часто употребляются в пассивной форме. Похищение людей с целью получения выкупа соответствует глаголу to kidnap. Угонять/похищать машину, самолет — to hijack.The journalists were kidnapped a week ago — Эти журналисты были похищены (взяты в заложники) неделю тому назад.
There had been three hijackings in the last two weeks — За последние две недели было совершено три угона (машин).
The plane was hijacked on its way to Italy — Самолет был захвачен, когда он летел в Италию.
Русские заложник, заложница соответствуют английскому hostage:to take smb as a hostage — взять кого-либо в качестве заложника;
to take hostages — брать заложников;
to hold hostages — держать/удерживать заложников.
He was taken/held a hostage — Его взяли заложником/удерживают в заложниках.
